A chance to learn through experiments, observation

Kochi: A unique initiative by Cusat to mould budding science talents has turned a big hit.

The Science Talent and Total Capacity Development Programme offered by the varsity’s Centre for Science in Society (C-SiS) has offered hands-on learning experience to more than 20,000 students since its inception almost 10 years ago.

“Students are exposed to rare and innovative facilities to learn science through observation and experiments as part of the programme. A science park, science pavilion, ‘see and believe’ laboratories in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics, mini workshop, computer laboratory, science library, and a science-based toy laboratory are the facilities offered,” said C-SiS Director K.G. Nair.

The centre now imparts training to school and college teachers from across the State in conducting demonstrations and offering modules inculcating the basic principles of science for students in an interesting manner.

The programmes are offered in two batches that include junior (Classes IV to VI) and senior (Classes VII to X). Each student should do two projects in science, which will be presented at an exhibition.

Students also get an opportunity to do simple experiments with the help of instructors at the centre. Education through multimedia computers using audio and video CDs and science films are the other attractions at the centre. C-SiS has over 90 gadgets that encourage children to experience the philosophy of ‘learn while you play’.
